Girl Meets Brush. Edinburgh born brand review.

Hello readers.

Everyone had a good week? Hoping your not all catching the winter bugs like me, its a killer!

Lets dive into this weeks review. Edinburgh born makeup brush brand founded by celebrity Makeup Artist Lynne Mills.

A bit about the brand…

Founded in 2015, Girl Meets Brush is a product range from celebrity make-up artist, Lynne Mills to make applying make up simple. Girl Meets Brush is a range of 12 essential make-up brushes for use by professionals and non-professionals alike and I am delighted to report that this brand, like Kat Von D are 100% vegan friendly and cruelty free!

The Pro Expert Team is a collective concept of Make up Artists from across the UK to providing tutorials to go alongside the brushes. Hand-selected by Girl Meets Brush the Experts demonstrate talent and expert knowledge then passed onto you.

So everyday this week I used these brushes to apply my makeup. Here is my Straight Talk review.

I hate to admit that I am a bit of a makeup snob. I love my high end brands but over the last year more and more new high end brands are selling for incredible prices which is great news for less makeup obsessed women who just want a solid product or brush thats going to last them years. I used to spend £20-35 on one brush. Yes, one brush. However, I can honestly say I do not spend that type of money on brushes or makeup anymore because I’m becoming wiser that bigger brands are ripping me off and I feel I’m paying more for the brand name rather than a quality product. And these brands know that about some of us so I’m not buying it anymore when I can get the same if not more for my hard earned cash elsewhere. I can promise you there is no need to. If you want new brushes or want to buy a set for someone else I think to myself, what are your choices? Debenhams, Boots, Superdrug? These will either be over or underpriced and you won’t know what to do with them because they hand them over and send you on your way. They got their sale, now your on your own with a brush set where you’ll go home, look at every brush in confusion wondering what on earth every one does? Are you using it right? Where do I place it on my face and many many more things I’m sure that run through your head.

Well this is one thing that Girl Meets Brush absolutely smashed. With any purchase you receive a full makeup brush guide and a free online consultation to ask any questions you feel you need to get the best out the brushes. Before you even try the brushes you will read through the booklet at each brush, then feeling more excited about your new little treasures because you actually know how to use them. It is such a smart idea especially if your not great at applying your makeup or for someone else like your mum, sister, friend etc who’s trying to get into it but doesn’t have the first clue where to look. I personally love buying for my mum. As they get older they just don’t buy these things for themselves but when we buy it for them they are always so happy that they’ve had that nudge to keep wearing or to start wearing a little makeup. With these she wont be lost, she will have her brush guide to explain it all.

The brushes themselves are insanely soft on the skin. They glided on so effortlessly making it easier to apply. I didn’t know what to think when I felt how soft they were but I kept an open mind and I’m pleased to say its a winner for me. If you have irritable skin, prone to a break out etc softer brushes will be much kinder on your skin. They will encourage you to not be heavy handed because the brushes pick up the product perfectly like any other high end brush so you can take it easy on your skin. They come in a very smart makeup bag keeping your brushes clean and very handy when your going away on any trips.

My ultimate favourites from the collection are the angled brow brush that is slightly longer than any I have used which gets the job done so much faster. The bronzer/blusher and contour brush are heavenly to apply. The eyeliner and blending brush were the two that surprised me the most. I’m not fantastic at doing liner on myself so when I see a new liner brush it frightens me to try it but this little wonder was such a big surprise and I’ve been using each time since. If you own a powder highlighter, you need the highlight brush thats all i’ll say. If you want to glow from a mile away this is your new best friend. Honestly, all the brushes are great. The only thing I think is a bit steep is the price. For the full face makeup brush set is £69.99. I did some research and other brands such as Zoeva who are becoming more popular than MAC have a full face brush set for £99.99 and the quality is no different, so I asked Girl Meets Brush for a discount code for you all and she is giving you all 25% off! There are smaller sets on their site around £50 or you can just buy a couple of singles but why get a few when you can get them all for £52 with your exclusive 25% discount code: Natalie25 saving you exactly £17.49. In my experience after buying many brushes at crazy prices over the years, this is a terrific price for every brush you will ever need considering the quality and longevity you will get out of them.

You can buy your new brushes here. They also ship worldwide which is pretty impressive. A good idea if you want to send a great gift to someone in another country or if your reading this in the states etc, go get one! It’ll be your first brush set from Scotland.

If you want to see me apply the brushes in my first impressions YouTube video made for you click here.

I hope you love the brushes or whoever you buy them for loves them too. Keep in touch and let me know what brushes are your favourite as well? I’ll be giving you all some tips on how to keep your brushes clean so they last you years to come and apply like new!

This week, take those few minutes to apply your makeup, mascara, blush, lipgloss, whatever you feel is your best feature and be confident. Even if your having a bad day, week or month keep going with it and take some time for yourself.

Non of us are perfect, we all have an insecurity but we should always make the very most of what we have. We are all beautiful, in our own special way. Show it off!

Thank you for reading,

What’s YOUR favourite?

Welcome back guys n gals!

So I’ve been trying red lipsticks all week for you. One that doesn’t disappear too soon or smudge all over your face and teeth and what did I learn? That there isn’t one that 100% doesn’t smudge but I found one very close to it. It will be my go to from now on.

Welcome to the colourful world of growing makeup brand – Kat Von D

Liquid Lipstick in the shade NOSFERATU

katvond_ell_nosferatu01 7daa025114c4c26bf265c2e39bef02a0

A liquid lipstick is exactly what it says it is. A lipstick that isn’t solid like most but a liquid that smoothy applies to your lips (depending which one you go for)

This red isn’t too bright and not too dark. A perfect red for Christmas nights out!      85b7cc7da5f2e800acabddcf52a33693

It lasts for hours on your lips and one application is more than enough, therefor it will last you a very long time. For me, its about quality. Not having to go out and buy a new lippy all the time so months, maybe years go by (depending how much you love your lippy) and your not spending your cash trying to find that perfect red lip that you can count on, because its safely stored at home already. This goes for any lip shade. It is a matte finish, but if you prefer a glossy finish, simply put some clear or red gloss on top and bingo! A glossy red lip. One thing that stood out to me was when I went to kiss my other half with this big red lip on (after a few french martinis) it didn’t transfer all over his face, just a little unlike most lipsticks that leave an imprint. The key to this is that the formula is so matte that it sticks to your lips and dries, leaving less chance of staining.

red lips isolated in white

We can now buy many Kat Von D products from Debenhams website, not in stores yet in Scotland sadly but hopefully soon as she just opened a store in London 2 weeks ago and of course there are many other shades to choose from if red isn’t your cup of tea. It retails at £16 but is currently on offer on Debenhams website for 10% off, £14.40. You might be reading this saying ‘£14 for a lipstick’?! If you aren’t fussed about longevity then don’t worry, I found you a close enough dupe. It doesn’t last half as long on the lips but if your happy to carry a compact mirror and top up on the go then this will suit you just fine.

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in shade – MADRID

As stated it is a matte finish. What’s the difference? It is creamier on your lips but does not last very long. The pigment and quality is no where near the same. Like many things in life this is very much a ‘get what you pay for’. If you eat or drink it’ll come off pretty fast but if your on a budget it’ll still look gorgeous. Just top it up so your lips aren’t bare or patchy. The other difference is of course, the price. £5.50. A fantastic price but in my opinion, doesn’t even come close to the quality and longevity of Kat Von D. You’ll use more of it, therefor it’ll run out much faster and there you are again, back at the beauty counter handing out another £5.50.

Another brand that is also top notch and producing beautiful liquid lipsticks is Huda Beauty. An american makeup artist who now has liquid lipsticks, lashes and a new eyeshadow palette. Her liquid lipsticks are £18. The shades are stunning. I have a good 5 or 6 of these now as they last so long. If you fancy a little look click here where there is also a terrific video showcasing the colours and how to apply, which can be used for any brand. You can purchase the NYX Liquid lip cream at most Boots stores now or online here. I’ll be chatting more about liquid lips down the line. Another winner is MAC Russian Red or Ruby Woo, again a matte finish retailing at £15.50. You can view or buy these here. Rimmel have also just launched an entire new lipstick collection so if you try these please let us know what you think? They are available in Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Boots and more.

You might be thinking that I don’t mind spending my money trying and testing different lipsticks because I love makeup so much but your wrong. No one likes to flush their money away on a product that doesn’t do the job. I’d rather have kept the money and gone out! I have simply learned the hard way that it is worth paying extra for one that I won’t have to replace for a long time.

Comment below and tell me if you have a favourite red lipstick? Why do you love it so much? How long does it last? Then maybe it will help someone else find their red lipstick. Let me know if you purchase any of the above and give your Straight Talk review.

I contacted an up ‘n’ coming makeup brush brand from Edinburgh that is doing extremely well and asked if my readers could receive a discount for any of the brushes on their website. They generously sent me the brush set to try out all this week to then give you my Straight Talk review. I listened to many, many women who said they have brushes but they are old, they can’t afford lots of different brushes or they aren’t very good quality. I’ll be trying out the full face brush set as it has every single brush you need, high quality with a massive saving that should last you years if you look after them and I’ll tell you how. I am exciting to try these out for you, give my honest opinion if they are worth the money and hopefully you’ll be set in the brush department and have a flawless application. Who and what is this new brand I’m talking about?

Tune in next week to see… finished-color-winking-tongue-out-emoji-face

Have a great week everyone. Don’t forget to put your lippy on!   41xvjhgrkplNatalie Grace. x

Straight Talk Beauty Blog

Welcome to my first Straight Talk beauty blog post!

Let’s jump right in and get started with this weeks findings…

This weeks subjects are picking the right foundation and applying foundation with brushes or a beauty blender? And some affordable yet unbelievably good brushes and tutorials for you to watch. Go grab a cuppa, sit back and lets talk makeup…

Picking the right foundation.

I’m asked every week about how I’ve managed to select the right foundation on a client because it does make the foundation look more natural and well blended. And guess what, it makes you look younger too. Have you ever had a foundation that looks ashy on you? That you tested on your hand and not your jawline? Well here’s what to do so you don’t flush anymore money away on a bad match foundation. Go to a well lit beauty counter such as Debenhams where you will see brightly and very clearly how well the foundation truly matched your neck. The sales advisor should always ask you (or tell you in my opinion) whether you have pinky toned skin or yellow toned skin and prove to you by showing you properly. Don’t stand at a beauty counter confused about what colour you are when someone can help you. Yes, I know some of them may get it wrong but its ok, here’s some tips to avoid picking the wrong one. I always thought I was pinky toned until I got a job at MAC (which I am no longer in) and couldn’t believe the amazing difference in my makeup once I was told…eh your not a pinky tone you are 100% yellow. Damn was she right! I still to this day hang my head in shame that I wore such a bad match foundation. Even though the match I was given was spot on I see so many people walking away with wrong matches. My advice to you, do not feel pressured to buy and don’t wait until you’ve completely ran out of foundation so you buy whatever one they give you. Let them put a good amount of 2 choices pink and yellow from your cheek to your jawline and see for yourself. ASK FOR SAMPLES! I was given a sample at a counter in Edinburgh a couple of weeks ago. I tried it on the next day and what did I look like? I looked like I’d been splatted in the face with pink ashy paint! I couldn’t believe how wrong the advisor matched me for a £48 foundation. If I bought it I would have taken it back but thats more hassle so get your sample, try it for yourself and take as many samples as you can get.

Foundation brushes.

Not that there’s anything wrong with applying foundation with your fingers but not once have I seen anyone really take their time to blend it in so they don’t have streaks all over their face and its not the most hygienic option unless you religiously wash your hands every single time. Brushes are faster, quicker, stain free and do the blending for you. Why use your fingers then have to go to the bathroom to wash your hands so you don’t get it all over your clothes, to then go back and finish the job? Its exhausting just thinking about it.

Now we are in the beautiful, gifted world of the beauty blender.

Never has makeup looked so flawless and glowing until this bad boy came along and now comes in all shapes and sizes. Me, I prefer the original. Real Techniques ‘beauty sponge’ as they call it is the most affordable and does the job perfectly. A beauty blender should be dampened before use or it defeats the purpose, which is to soak up excess foundation and hydrate your skin so you get a flawless complexion every time. Not cake face. The only thing I don’t love about this product is that it does have a tendency to steal some of your foundation. This is usually because it is too wet which is my fault. Even so, it really does change your foundation game so before you go in with it, ring all the water out of it and squeeze it on a cloth, dab your blender into the foundation on your hand first and it seams to stop it from happening, for me at least because your beauty blender isn’t bare of product before you start. I use this technique on clients and it never gives me any problems. Apply your foundation to your hand, dab some all over your face and get patting girl! Be patient and simply pat it up and down all over your face and its just magnificent for under eye concealer. You can get your beauty blender from Superdrug or Boots or quick and easy to your door from Amazon here where it’s on sale for just over £4. Don’t tell me you don’t have time to apply foundation properly… judgejudy

The brush I’m about to talk about next will leave you with no excuse…

If your not a beauty blender kind of girl, then here’s your new foundation brush which you can actually use to apply your foundation with then go over with a beauty blender.

Say hello to the Morphe M439.

You Tube sensation Jaclyn Hill introduced me to this brush and I have never looked back. It’s synthetic so your not losing any foundation and its thicker, rounded, dense shape makes it a quick and easy job. And the best thing about it? It doesn’t cost a fortune. It’s affordable. You do not need to spend £45 on a foundation brush, are you kidding? It’s the name your paying for these days more than the brush. Even though theres almost too much to choose from at least we have more options now than we ever have before in makeup so theres no excuse for not having a cracking brush to whip out every morning. Click here to see Jaclyn talk about it, skip to 5 minutes 10 seconds, along with many other affordable brushes. If you want to see it in full action click here and skip to 3 minutes 48 seconds. If you want to buy this big beauty for yourself here is the link to UK based website Beauty Bay. And guess what, its on sale! From £17.95 (I think) to £12.50. If you give it a try, tag me in any posts on social media and give me your Straight Talk feedback.

I’m going to be trying out some skincare next because its just as, if not more important than makeup. Yes, I just said that. And I’m on the hunt for the perfect red lipstick that doesn’t smear all over our face when we go out and lasts as long as possible. And, nail varnish that doesn’t chip for more than 24 hours, does such a thing exist?? I’ll also be giving some samples to readers to get their straight talk about products so everyones opinion matters.
